On May 13, 2011, our mother, Cindy, was diagnosed with stage 4 Non small cell lung cancer (adenocarcinoma). She has never smoked a day in her life. Since being diagnosed, as a self-employed and charitable family law attorney she continued to work hard for others in need. We sincerely thank you for your contribution, prayers, and support for our mother.

  2. Dear Cindy,

All things are possible with the Lord. My wife has been fighting cancer for over 5 years and is stage 4 breast cancer/adenocarcinoma. Like you she serves the Lord.

At times during her treatment she was without insurance. We were blessed in July 2011 with discovering she could obtain a low cost full coverage insurance that excepts pre-existing conditions from day one. I've included the link below for you. God Bless you and you family.

Thank you so much for your love and support.

Tom, I too found out about PCIP. We finally got it for mom too. I know we've already racked up quite a lot of bills, but we do have payment plans set up for those and of course all donations go to help with this and the premiums. Our premium is roughly $5oo and I think we are in network where we are now. Every bit helps. I am so grateful for this coverage. It just amazes me how expensive cancer treatment is. I don't understand how one pill drug is $10,000 or one infusion treatment was roughly $50,000. More than anything, I just wish we had a solution to this cancer. She carries the ALK mutation, but it is a variant mutation that has not been studied. The doctor has said her cancer is the "rarest of the rare".

Anyway, she is amazing and staying so positive. She's not going to give up and will she continue to fight this. As you know dealing with cancer is very depressing and lonely so we just try get through it one day at a time.

One goal in all this is to help others becuase it is a lonely and completely frightening battle. I met a great lady and friend, Kathryn Brown, who has started a nonprofit organization called Cancervive Foundation. I look forward to working with her to help others who are afflicted by this disease.

Also, I go to a great website: inspire.com where I am able to talk to others dealing with cancer. It is a great place to learn and find friendships and healing.

Thank you all for your help and God bless you.

    1. Hi Vanessa,

I'm so happy you Mom was able to obtain insurance coverage through PCIP. We were very blessed to have stumbled upon it after racking up alot of medical bills. Even when we were paying out of pocket, none of the Doctors or diagnostic companies ever told us about the PCIP insurance plan. Had we known, we would not be on the hook for so many bills. I totally understand your Mom's financial plight. We even had to go through a three year Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

My wife, like your Mom is also working as much as she is capable of, even though she is now considered totally disabled. She provides mental health counseling to several patients a week, this is about as much as she is able to do. She does not qualify for diability benefits because she was never able to earn enough credits in the past 10 years to qualify.

Besides the insurance and medical bill issues, we just found out we are financially liable to pay the IRS taxes on at least $147,000 in student loan forgiviness with the potential for another $350,000. You see prior to my wifes cancer diagnosis she was in a doctoral program for clinical psychology. During this time she was being stalked for over three years. I'm certain the stalking was responsible for her immune system breaking down and ultimately her developing cancer.

To make a long story short she ended up owing the Department of Education $500,000 in student loans, penalties and interest. She never completed her doctorate due to her health and has only been able to earn $46,000 during the past 10 years.

We are both self employed and I take care of most of our daily living chores. My beautiful Wife is my lifes #1 priority.

Even now as we face additional losses we will always be rich in faith.

I hate cancer but will not let it rob of of our joy.

We will always have our faith in God and his Grace.

I will keep your Mother in my prayers. She is in good hands.

Vanessa, I know that if your Mom or family members need someone to talk to, Naila will make herself available to you, (she might charge you two chocolate chip cookies), but that would be it. Let me know and I will send you her contact information.

      Kind Regards,

      Tom
